Women and sports.

Let me stop you right there. Crazy feminists, gosh, I'm writing alongside your thoughts so don't even get all nitty natty at the title before you read the article. Holy tamoli! Like hounds, people wonder why the media and gender in education course was such a target for me. People just can't wait to hear what is going to be said, and yes people, as in human beings, as in all people of every shape and every size, every colour and every belief; so quick to draw your weapon yet I come in peace.

So! As I was stating...women and sports has always been one of those neglected or underestimated topics. Women have just as much capability at playing sports as men; and women sometimes even play harder because they have something to prove.

I'm going to say something, if uo don't like it, bite me but it's science and fact! Women are usually at a biologically greater disadvantage when playing sports against men. This is not true in all cases but realistically speaking of the masses, let's think about this. Many factors play into this and many actors have been changing over the years so in going to write this as accurately as possible based on previous reading and observation.

That is one thing I absolutely despise about writing articles or posts of this nature, you need to be politically correct and if you can't be, you need to thoroughly explain the things you say or ppffftttt, good luck climbing out of that hole. Especially being. Heterosexual, white, middle class male....ppfftttt no one of any sort of minority or marginalized group wants to hear what I have to say because I physically cannot relate. I don't care what you say or how you say it but emotions are also apart of science, emotions are universal, the gravity of them in situations is not, but sadness and insult are something everyone feels, the contexts in which we feel then is the determining factor.

Well now that you have completed my sensitivity training and you understand that I mean no harm, in going to write this how I would say it if I was explaining to someone close to me, so bite me, you been warned.

Women do not get much; if any tv spots on sport networks. Television sporting networks are overrun by the latest trades and games. It was actually so neglected that even on the slowest sports news day, women still only got a weaker (much weaker amount of tv exposure) than men. This is not even talking about the stats documented in article in a study that was done over 100 straight hours or so of television being watched while the channel was on the sporting networks. This expanded to four different networks. Guess which was the most negligent towards women's sports? Three somewhat local networks and sports centre, just guess? I guess unmade it pretty obvious, but ya, SC!

The article I read even talked about how, okay, actually, question for sports fans:

How many female sports news anchors are you familiar with? How much tv time do they EVER get compared to the makes? Exactly. Don't know and an even bigger don't know. No, no, no sports fans, don't say oh well I think; well maybe...no! You know it's true. It's a man's world, kinda...

Anyways! So ya, something else to think about, when they do cover women's sports, how much footage, interview time  and overall general mention do they get? Oh buddy! You don't know? Let me tell you, next to none.

One occasion a woman had a long, well longer interview than usual, was sable, the wwe (back then, wwf) wrestler. They visited her on a shoot for playboy magazine I believe and instead of focusing on her career and what not, they remarked on her sexuality...pretty much the entire segment. Bold, cause she probably could have beat the heck out of the reporter lol

Another time a woman had record week long mention was an athlete who lost her shirt during the sport and that is exactly why she was mentioned for that long; she was mocked and degraded by reporters and anchors saying that she would be great at commercially advertising women's sports bras, etc. I'm all for jokes and poking fun once in awhile, but she is a career athlete, surely the time allocated to mentions and jokes of her could have been a little more encouraging.

I could go on, start talking about sports illustrated and say that women are more known for their bikini slots in that magazine than they are for the athletes featured in them, women specifically, sometimes even guys though. I know next to nothing about sports magazines other than that you get a lot of personal lives and careers of athletes, etc. but I better know the magazines for their infamous bikini issues. I feel bad saying that, but then again, I mean sports is just not something that interests me like comics or girls do.

Anywho. Rant over. Stay mindful of those women boys and recognize their talents as well as their beauty. The only thing more attractive (to me at least) than a beautiful woman, is a beautiful woman that I can speak with.

Ciao for now,

CB

P.s. If you ever read something and want proof or want a copy of the article; honestly for this blog and lack their of readers, I never post any of that, BUT there is always google or the comment box below, leave one and I'll get back to you :)
